In a swift break from tradition for me, I’ve been drafting quite a bit (aka “more than once”) in the opening week of a format. Is fun! Spicy! Are cards any good or what? Let’s get an exciting P1p1!!

draft

Well that’s not a good P1p1. Took the semi-decent werewolf only to veer straight into red with some Thermoalchemists. Sadly UR spells was cut, so I ended up with WR. Sort of. I ended up building two separate decks.

The top version is RW aggro, which is what Boros wants to do, amirite? 1 drops to removal. This could work! The bottom is a weird RW control… spells… something. Two Thermo-Alchemists provide staying power while there is some loop-de-looping of spells. And the sheer card quality of this version was way, way better than the relatively bland aggro curve-out deck. Bland just doesn’t cut it in Midnight Hunt. The top deck went 0-3 and the bottom deck went 4-0. Proof = pudding.

It may not look it, but I think the day/night shenanigans is a closet control strategy. It’s just nature of the mechanic: the more turns elapse that swing between day and night, the more recurring the advantage. Obviously these cards are all decent attackers, so I don’t think you go into RW thinking “gosh I hope I’m control” but it is a nuance worth noting.

2-1

  1. i’m with you on day/night shenanigans being control. you need time for the payoff. what do you think the finisher is? do you need to draft The Celestus to make it work?
