Draft log

Ugh, what a draft. UR wizards was open (given the late Amulet & Umara Mystic) but neither blue nor red were particularly open. I got enough from pack 2 to have a deck, but I’m alarmingly low on creatures. Which made getting a Roil Eruption P3p6 so frustrating. I really wanted that Bug Catcher but I just couldn’t say no!

So this was pretty contentious in the Super Happy Funtime Draft Pals Discord. I’m on Roilmage, others are on Falconer. I think this comes down to the question of the synergy potential of the Roilmage, since I think the Falconer is a close-but-clear winner in Quadrant Theory. My stance is that UG and UR would both prefer Roilmage, where UB and UW both want Falconer. Since the first two are top tier decks in the format, that was my tiebreaker. You can always find room for more Roilmages, that’s the power of 2-drop/6-drop. You can easily overdose on Falconers and 5-drops.

Well, three Into the Roils and double Glacial Grasp make this pretty clear: tempo attack! This means I need to keep my few creatures alive so they can bash in.

round 1

Easy keep, two creatures and interaction. Turned into a pretty easy win too.

Trickier keep, but 2 mana is good. Playing the tapped land first to get out the Channeler so I can go looking for land if necessary. However, I drew Amulet and so going that route to maximize that instead. I curve out, oppo stumbled after 3 mana, and it was over very quickly.

round 2

A good keep, but oppo had a good UG kicker deck. Played Aescetic to stabilize and then Roost to grind me out.

Actually, their deck was even better. Two shell shields fizzled my tempo cards (and denied me the card draw) and it was all over from there.

round 3

Two spell-lands, but I drew lands nicely so they could power up my Amulet. Oppo was BW clerics with good cheap removal so they quickly stabilized and then–rudely–kept drawing cards.

I really wanted to keep this hand and I probably would have if I was on the draw. But it was too irresponsible on the play. Kept a decent mulligan, but same story as before. I couldn’t act fast enough to get any sort of board presence. And once they had *their* board presence, it was all over except for the shouting.

    it’s really sounding like you are spiking it up instead of johnny time city. talk to me. is it that if you aren’t up on the limited meta you just get 100% trounced so you have to cow tow?

    1. I’m 100% spike in limited. It’s constructed where I want to create something beautiful and unique. But my draft policy is to always draft as if I made day 2 of the GP.
