I’m not entirely sure if I could tell you what I accomplished this week. Work was… there. Oh I cooked a new Mexican meatball soup! I think that will have to qualify as the big win. 2020 everybody!!!

Draft log

Pretty easy P1p1, Lullmage on power. Then it got bonkers fast. I stayed in blue, maybe looking at UG kicker with wizards. I then proceeded to get hooked up with another Amulet, a Roost of Drakes, and from there I’m off to the races.

interesting pick: P1p5

So after taking some good early wizard action, along with a Relic Amulet, I get a very empty pack. There’s off-brand red cards, a late Kor Celebrant, or a green wizard. I take the wizard, maybe look to build LSV’s vaunted blue/GREEN wizards deck.

game plan

Well we are looking at a controlling shell. Play the long game and rely upon the cumulative advantage that Roost & Amulet(s) can provide. I’m also excited to cast Chilling Trap with the Master of Winds in play. Sideboarding: only really worried about getting trucked by an aggro deck, so be prepared to bring in Cleric, Molten Blast, (taking out some slower cards like Lullmage or a Geysermage.)

round 1

Very iffy keep. I draw into action and opponent ragequits when I get amulet down and start casting kicked stuff.

round 2

Not a great keep, but there’s a play. I draw two lands. Opponent casts tazeem raptor then DOESN’T pick up one of their incredibly powerful spell-lands. I continue to flood: 12 lands & four spells. That’s a feel-bad loss.

First, I move on the play against this deck. It wasn’t THAT fast, but getting to kill landfall creatures before they grow out of range is key. Didn’t feel great keeping a hand with no islands, but drawing two Amulets mitigated my sadness. Oppo was on color screw so I ran them over.

For the rubber match, easy keep with Fissure Wizard. Unfortunately they drew their big bois (Stomper & Ascetic) as I flooded. 11 land, 8 spells (one of those spells is a spell-land). Sometimes ya lose, but very frustrating.

round 3

Easy keep. Good defensive speed and flying threats. Drew into Roost and didn’t really look back. Oppo’s deck didn’t look that good, so I took out the Lullmage and put in the Molten Blast in case I fall behind on board.

Drew into a second Amulet. Playing around Jawari’s Disruption but opponent is on color screw so it really isn’t much of a game.

Interesting Moments

loot?

What to discard!? I eventually settled on the Sentinel on overall power and I had enough removal to not get trucked if something happened to my beautiful Sphinx.

2-1

Super disappointing not to go 3-0 with the beauty, but that happens sometimes with Magic. Probably quite helpful that I was listening to LR’s Q&A when they spoke about how to deal with disappointment. Rule #1: never feel entitled. I take credit for the victories where my oppo had bad luck, right? That’s just my deck being merciless!!! So it’s important to have context, recognize the luck when it’s on your side and don’t be too despondent when it’s not.

Besides, we’ll always have this moment of purity: both Amulets AND Roost in play!

  1. stop the presses. land time!

i just noticed your lands in the keep or mull. are those the white cliffs of dover? are you using the current set’s lands or do they let you pick any lands from your collection.

    i must know!!

    1. Yes! Those are the fancy “Euro lands” that were a special tournament prize from the early 2000s. There’s Holland, England, and one other country. You also get to use the old land backdrop. They are worthy of their own post that I need to do.

Did I spend actual money on these ridiculous things? I did! I have no regrets
