The goal of the day was to have low stress. I suited up for a good cold-weather run (only to have the sun burst through and promptly make me sweat through all the layers). I read all about Theranos, the blood testing scam from a few years back. Holy moly, late-stage capitalism might need to call it a day.

Fun draft! Felt like I ended up forcing UR a bit. In fact, I think there’s a flat-out better line where I go white. I legit didn’t see it there. But it would be *very* hard to resist being passed Roost of Drakes in the second pack, so I think holding on for dear life and trying to put together enough kicker cards was for the best.

Here’s that P1p3. Good solid UR start, but Fledging is one of the few reasons to play white. I hold the course and take the good spell-land, though I think white was certainly available in my seat.

The plan is.. to draw Roost of Drakes it appears. If that doesn’t happen, I have some decent tempo plays to hold the ground and poke them in the air with fliers and/or a big boi like the Charger or Minotaur. Not the most robust plan.

round 1

Not mulling any start with Roost! I draw a red spell-land, easy play-as-land since I need to get to four-mana, stat. I get roost, turn the corner and win.

Keep or mull is so easy with Roost! Oppo stumbled on mana, so it was another very straightforward “cast Roost, cast Charger, profit”. No “????” here!

round 2

Not great, but playable. A nice curve at least. Facing a very weird BW deck with bad cards… but also Felildar Retreat. Oppo kept generating 2/2 cats instead of boosting their team and I was able to race through the air.

No great sideboarding, stick with the plan.

Lacking islands, but Fissure Wizard makes this (marginally) playable. I draw into good action, but oppo gets Felidar Retreat again and this time remembered to use the +1/+1 option, running me over.

Mulled this 7 lander. Then kept, putting tapped land on the bottom. I draw into Roost and stay pretty firmly in control.

Tough keep. Using The fissure wizards to go get mana. Opponent has a strange UB deck with removal and…Confounding Conundrum?? Can confirm: card does nothing.

Aggressive tempo keep. But this time I lost to army of 3/3 fliers with Charix-the-0/17 blanking my entire board.

A nervous keep, but this is where Tormenting Voice shines. I draw into perfect land & action and promptly SQUANDER the Tormenting Voice right into opponent’s telegraphed counterspell. Still had enough to pull it out.

Do I loot here? This is the tension of looting effects with kicker cards, because I *do* want to get to six mana. I chose not too loot and keep hitting land drops.

I would say it was an overperformance, but I think most any deck with Roost of Drakes should be a very serious contender.
