Draft Log
Early Picks
I feel rather proud how I navigated this draft. Through 14 picks, I felt like I was somewhere in Mardu, with the white flowing late (Guidemother P1p9 &c). Then I got a FIRM signal that directly upstream is NOT a green drafter with a P1p15 Wildwood tracker remaining instead of a basic land. Huh.
So I open up The Great Henge P2p2 gave me a Pie. Resist the Pie? Black was just so, so cut so I took a disciplined pick with Carver, thinking that green is my lane now. Rewarded: green was open and a Wandermare wheeled so I nestled into G(w) adventure.
Self-Assessment
Deck

Well I cracked open two mythics, so this deck better perform. It’s light on removal but has 2.5 adventure payoffs (Innkeeper, Pathlighter, and Wandermare at 0.5), 10 Adventure creatures, and a goodly amount of tricks. Use tricks as removal early and hold the line until the bombs come down.
Results
- Round 1 vs. BRu: Oppo landed Midnight Clock (?), but I curved out and all the Baked Pies in the world won’t help you. Game 2 became a battle of Henge vs. Syr Konrad. Got a little dicey, but ultimately jumping the Treefolk with Guidemother (aka 9/7 flying) closed it out.
- Round 2 vs. G: I kept a hand with only forests, which isn’t ideal but it DID have plays. When oppo started with Innkeeper to Order of Midnight, then double Pie, well that ended in a hurry. Game 2 was closer, but Reaper of Night and two key removal spells while I flooded was enough to put me down.
- Round 3 vs. BR: Oppo started out with double Trebuchet. I, however, finally land Questing Beast which is exactly as broken as everyone says. In game 2 I draw Sir Questing again, wait a turn so I can cast it with Shepard of the Flock to protect it. The game was under control (Questing Beast will do that) but had a nice play at the end where I used the Shepard to get back my +2/+2 trick to finish the game a turn earlier.
Learnings
Obviously opening good cards is a fundamental skill in Magic. I still feel like I built the best possible deck, though I should remember that the curve-out drops just aren’t very good when you have a game plan to go long.
re p1p15: foil land? is that a thing?
how playable is the wildwood tracker?
