Early Picks

Early picks seemed very straight forward. Despite a P1p3 Revenge of Ravens, black dried up quickly. But I quickly found a green lane, fought through a tragic pack 2, and ended up in a weird non-food GB deck.

Most interesting pick: P3p2 Syr Konrad vs. Outmuscle. I only had a Pie and Reave Soul and my 5-drop slot was very full. So I think my overall deck EV was higher adding removal despite Konrad being a much better card.

Deck

Despite not having the greatest card-advantage, this is definitely a deck that benefits from the long play. Defend early, build the bigger backbone and then go big. Decent removal. Seems like a 2-1 deck: very reliable but isn’t doing anything unfair.

Results

  • Round 1 vs. G: oppo led off with a quick Wildborn Preserver immediately boosted by the Cauldron Familiar. That’s a 4/4 attacking on turn 3. Oppo’s deck was very solid: Savvy Hunter, Syr Konrad, Swift End. In game 2 oppo repeated the Preserver/Familiar combo, but I ramped out some Big Knights. I then topdecked my removal and powered through my last Paladin. VVery flavorful. Game 3 was equally epic but I discarded two of my three swamps to the Night’s Fear… and then didn’t draw a source of black for my Syr Conrad or Pie. Oppo stuck two of their big threats and that was that. Disappointing but not really surprising.
  • Round 2 vs. UB: Very grindy matchup, except oppo seemed to have forgotten about their Cauldron Familiar. Right when I almost had them, they got Rankle out–who has haste–and nugged me down before I could suplex him. Fortunately in games 2 and 3 I stabilized and fought back with Large Knights. Which is good, since it would be embarrassing to lose to a UB controlling deck running multiple Gingerbrutes.
  • Round 3 vs. WG: Oppo with double Beanstalk Giant was always going to be a tall order for me to overcome. And I didn’t. Then won the next two games more handily.

Learnings

Honestly, nothing too specific. Seemed like good clean magic.

2-1
