Draft

Sadly unable to turn Judith into a Rakdos deck, but Gruul was VERY open for a lot of the draft. Some interesting choices in shaping the Gruul deck

P2p1: Gatebreaker Ram (0 gates) vs. Incubation Druid vs. Savage Smash #1

P2p4: Sunder Shaman #3 vs. Savage Smash #1

P2p5: Rhythm of the Wild vs. Savage Smash #2

P3p2: Amplifire vs. Sauroform Hybrid

Deck

Overall I’m pretty pleased with how this deck looks. Would have liked another solid 3-drop and maybe another Savage Smash to replace a Storm Strike, but this deck looks like it’s in the mood to beat down.

Results

  • Round 1: beat up on a Gruul mirror when he got manascrewed in game 1. Game 2 was a little dicey, as I kept a 2-land hand on the draw without green mana, but I eventually stabilized and ground him down with Clan Guildmage.
  • Round 2: facing.. Domri! That card is a beater. I’m able to get the ‘walker down, but he sticks a very large Rubblebelt Recluse backed up by a Savage Smash. Game two I start landing some Sunder Shaman (those are big bois) Oppo’s deck is good: Electrodominance, Skewer, powerful haste. We race and he has a sweet Burning-Tree Vandal into Skewer for lethal. We chat a bit, and that was a trophy deck for him. Clearly!
  • Round 3: aaaand a third mirror match. Glass of the Guildpact is pretty good when you go Zhur-Taa Goblin (two mana for 4/4) into Frenzied Arynx (4 mana for 5/5) Sort of outclasses my Savage Smashes pretty badly. But I draw a clutch Sunder Shaman and stabilize. Second game is ANOTHER race where I topdeck Storm Strike for exactsies.

Learnings

Storm Strike did great work. 1-mana tricks that half replace themselves are just fine. Honestly, I like all my picks, no real surprises or over performers. Never saw the Troll or the Rampage, so <shrug>.

2-1
