Draft

Draft Log

A bit proud of this draft, as I successfully don’t fall in love with solid black playables and find the open lane in Temur. It was a little confusing that Gruul seemed SO open from the right, but so cut from the left. I ended up in Simic, as blue just seemed really underdrafted at the table. Very late Sage’s Row Savant & Slimebinds. I got the late Sharktocrab, so I started taking Stony Strengths above splashing another Savage Smash. Unsure if correct. Also playing the free Galloping Lizrog, since taking a counter off Sharktocrab is actively a good thing.

Deck

This deck strikes me as a mid-range control. Trade early drops quite happily, stall the ground with Slimebinds and win with the airforce. I’m a bit sad I didn’t get a locket in this deck, but I can live without.

Results

  • Round 1: beat up on a Rakdos that had a case of mana screw when I mulliganed and then fell behind the air force in game 2.
  • Round 2: facing a weird gates deck that didn’t have gates payoffs, but had Frenzied Arynx, Sharktocrab etc. Pretty easily beat it off card quality… and fliers!
  • Round 3: Azorius in the finals. Sphinx of Foresight is the real thing. Slowed me down enough with countermagic, then got High Alert down. Got the Slimebinds out and put it some anti-air. Opponent gets stuck on 3 mana and I get my first Precog Preception and that was THAT. Game 3 was pretty solid. We trade resources, and I fire off another PP (that card is amazing). Unfortunately he lands High Alert again and that’s just really hard for me to deal with.

Learnings

Precog Preconception is the truth. Honestly, felt good. The Lizrog was fine, getting it super late in a pack is upside. But it was never dominant. No verdict on the Gyre Engineer, never saw play.
