Draft

Two drafts in the opening week?! My god, Lil Chandra must be going to bed quite early. And you would be correct.

Draft Log

Early Picks

P1p1: Reave Soul vs. Glass Casket vs. Dragonfire. I think Reave is best.
P1p2: Shepard of the Flock vs. Outmuscle
P1p3: Glass Casket vs. Searing Barrage

P2p1: Agonizing choice between Edgewall Innkeeper (great in GW adventure), Scalding Cauldron, and Trapped in the Tower. I take the Cauldron because despite the late green in pack 1, I’m still not sure of my lane. Responsible, but lacked flair. The Fierce Witchstalker in P2p5 solidified me in green

P3p4: Should have taken Once and Future over another Curious Pair.

Self-Assessment

The roughest hindsight: I should have taken that Innkeeper in P2p1. However, finding the green lane rewarded me handsomely in pack 3. Proud of myself that I didn’t get tempted by the Stolen by the Fae in P2p1, since blue was just cut to ribbons. But I stayed open, found my lane, and drew from the deep well of playables.

Deck

this is a more controlling deck. 9 adventure cards with 2 Adventure payoffs in the Clover & Mysterious Pathlighter. The Great Henge is also a very nice win-condition as well. Swapped out the Faerie Guidemother for another Maraleaf Rider for better mana and legs.

Results

  • Round 1 vs. UR: I mulled to 6 and get trapped on 3 lands for a bit. Folio of Fancies hit the battlefield! Not a good sign when choked on mana with cards in hand. And then Fires of Invention! Oddly, oppo stalled out and never had a board presence enough to slow me down. Game 2 oppo landed back to back Vantress Paladin (3/3 flying), but trying to race me and my food army wasn’t going to work well. I usde my Maraleaf riders to force bad blocks and force wolves through.
  • Round 2 vs. UR: Yorvo and a pair of Maraleaf Riders came down. Charmed Sleep knocked out Yorvo. Sundering Stroke took care of the rest of the my board. Game 2 I landed an Oaken Boon of Syr Hengehammer, giving the other attacking creature a +4/+4, which ended that game in a hurry. Game 3, I get out the Henge! Aaaand almost deck myself. But the Henge kept pumping out threats faster than oppo could respond.
  • Round 3 (finals!) vs. : Keeping a 5-lander is never great, but better than mulling. I flooded but oppo casted Memory Theft while I had a hand full of land. Aha! Game slowed down but oppo stuck Syr Konrad. 10 land and 5 spells will lose games. game 2 I faced the Vantress Gargoyle (the bizarre 5/4 flier for 2-mana), got the Henge picked out of my hand, and was getting whooped in the air until I topdecked Glass Casket. Hey, that is CMC <= 3! Unfortuantely the Reaper of Night and that stupid, overcosted discard just wrecked me as I fell behind permanently on resources.

Learnings

The nearly-mono deck definitely has some solid beef to it. My card evaluation skills need some honing in this set

2-1
