Draft Log

Early Picks

P1p1: Kind of interesting. I think Ancestral Blade has more staying power than the other 2-drops, so I run with that.
P1p2: Bag of Holding vs. Herald of the Sun. And a common missing? That’s very strange. Definitely take the Bag. Maybe there was a foil?
P1p3: Three strong white cards. Aerial Assault is removal-ish, but I think the flexibility and cheaper cost of Gods Willing is superior.
P1p4: Bishop of Wings over nothing.

I asked the brain trust at the Lords of Limited Discord about one particular pick, P3p7:

Brightwood Tracker is a C-, nice to have one of as a mana sink. The Gauntlets is usually a bad card. BUT my deck was well-positioned to make it awesome! Lots of cards that wanted buffs, high-toughness creatures. It could have helped me steal a game or two.

Assessment

Pretty easy to find my lane in white and green. I read pack 1 as being Green being open-ish and got moderately paid off in pack 3 with pick three Rabid Bites. The red in pack 2 was tempting but ultimately not for me.

Deck

What’s the plan? Well, muddled. I think I’m a combo deck with Fencing Ace + buffs. Uh. I think that’s it. Not good!

Results

  • Round 1 vs. U: Mono-blue Faeries and Sage’s Row Savant!

That is some SPICE. I lose game 1 (pictured above) to either decking or the airforce. Game 2 Redhamjack (who I’ve played before and is a cool, chatty oppo. Just my style) stumbled out of the gate. Game 3 I got a little greedy and kept a 1-lander with 3 two-drops and an Angelic gift. It didn’t work out, and Redham drew the dream

  • Round 2 vs. BWg: Game devolved into a board stall very quickly, with oppo’s Sanitarian Skeleton making a mockery of my Loxodon Lifechanter. The Bloodsoaked Altar then finished me nicely. In game 2 I FINALLY get to live the dream and land Feral Invocation on Fencing Ace. It’s delicious! Oppo also got stuck on three land, but a win is a win. Game 3 oppo landed an Ironroot Warlord that came a bit out of nowhere. Good splash card! I go all in, as I’ve seen zero removal from oppo, only to get wrecked by an Agonizing Syphon. Feels bad.

Learnings

On that draft, I needed to have picked the higher variance card (Gauntlets of Light) to try and help get my deck “there”. I don’t think the Butt Attack ™ deck is any good, but that was pretty much my deck’s only hope. I also needed to evaluate that card differently with the Fencing Aces in my deck, since the +2 on a doublestrike creature is much more real. It also would have turned on my (otherwise useless) Bishops.
