Draft

Draft felt a little rough. No clear signals in pack 1, so I just veered all over. Pack 2 pick 3 I get seduced by a Master Splicer, when I probably should have just taken the fixing. I end up in a three-color monstrosity without even the bombs to make me feel better. As they say on Lords of Limited, “That’s a yikes.”

This is a lot of yuck. I guess I have some card advantage engines with the Moldervine and Atemsis. Aside from that I think I just hunker down, play midrange, and hope for the best.

Results

• Round 1 vs UW: I get stuck on three lands (kept a 2-lander with low drops). I draw into mana and stabilize, though I admit that facing double Heart-Piercer Bow is shockingly annoying. Even with Mouldervine, I fall behind on resources and lose. I board out the Prismite (too many bows). Game 2, oppo gets stuck on 2-mana, once I curve into Frilled Sea Serpent, they just don’t have enough time to recover. Oppo gets on the front foot again with the stupid Maurader’s Axe and I mindlessly play my Cloud-Kin Seer into a Heart-Piercer Bow (though I still have to save my disenchant for the Steel Overseer that came out of nowhere). Game goes crazy long that I eventually pull out, though it doesn’t feel great that I barely triumphed against a deck packing Moorland Inquisitors prominently.
• Round 2 vs RG: I get a fast start and oppo goes slow. I have my board and he attacks with two dummies. I don’t block with Sea Serpent because my life total is at 18, not worth losing a win-con when he’s representing a trick. Well, he then casts TRIPLE Growth Cycle to alpha me down. In game 2 I flooded out and he beat me in the face with Cavalier of Flame.

• Roiund 3 vs. BG: oppo got off to a fast start, curving out with Feral Invocation into Thicket Crasher. To salt the wound slightly, he gets it back with Unholy Indenture (one of two in the deck!) and it’s real hard for me to block a 5/4. In game 2 I can’t keep a 1-lander, so I mulled to 6 into a decent hand. Oppo mulled, then dumped Reggie (the 7/6 dino that makes you discard every turn) that I promptly Sleep Paralysis. They conceded that one. Game 3, oppo was manascrewed on 2 lands and I won an unexciting game.

Learnings

Sometimes you get mediocre drafts and I should have prioritized fixing a little bit more so I could have wedged in the Mega Demon. Feel pretty lucky that I crawled my way to 2-1 frankly.
