Draft Log

Very weird draft. Pick 5 Savage Smash, Pick 6 Collision//Colossus cemented into gruul without any real countersignals. Green was dry, but BTV wheeled for me at pick 11 (!) so I was feeling pretty good. Maybe get some green in pack 2. But nay, no green there. Lots of Azorius! But then the Gruul dried up in pack 3 with Esper everywhere. I can’t really spot the missed signal.

Results

  • Round 1 vs. Temur: I absolutely steal a victory in this one. I’m getting pounded down by the Gateway Colossus and I make a desperate counterattack. Oppo (needlessly) also attacked with a 3/5, leaving two 1/1s as their only defense. Then he only blocked with one, giving just enough for Colossus to punch through. Game 2 I curve out and pound down with Rubblebelt Recluse.
  • Round 2 vs. Rakdos: not getting a playable until a Ghor-Clan Wrecker is a good way to lose to Rakdos. The lack of sideboarding options bites me here, as trying to out-race Rakdos with my Rubble but I win game 2 pretty handily with a smooth curve to my Rubblebelts. Game 3 stalls out with a bunch of my 3/3s staring at his Plague Wights. I get pushed into forcing an attack and get him down to 1. I then rip a Savage Smash allowing my Footlight Fiend to suicide and deal the last point. Whew!
  • Round 3 vs. Jund: oppo lands multiple Rubblebelts as I stall out. Game 2 he lands an early Rhythm that causes serious difficulty. Fortunately I’m enough ahead where a last-gasp hasted 2/2 got me the last two points. Game 3 goes alright, but an end of turn electrodominance removes a blocker and adds an additional attacker to finish me.

Learnings

Yeah, wasn’t THAT impressed with Rhythm of the Wild. It was pretty hilarious when it came down early, but very sad otherwise.
