Frilled Mystic vs. Grotesque Demise is an interesting P1p1 showdown. I take the flexibility over the power, as though Frilled is a two-for-one, it’s narrow in both deck and utility. Then come very close to taking one card of each color before a late Sphinx of New Prahv moved me into Azorius. Then nabbed some late gates, passed a Gatebreaker Ram and the game is officially afoot!

Results

  • Round 1: tough loss against a Simic deck where I misjudged how to play having dueling Scuttlegators. In game 2 I kept a two lander and a locket then didn’t draw a single piece of land. So that’s a thing.
  • Round 2: crazy board stalls where I stabilize with Azorius Skyguard and a Ram. Then Angelic Exultation that we trade off with Prying Eyes before he closes me out. Similar stall in game 2, but right as my Screaming Shield lands… he land the giant overrunny trampler guy, and that is that.

Learnings

Mana bases are really important. Sure having 6 gates feels pretty good, and having 9-9-7 isn’t THAT bad. But eesh, when it goes bad it goes real bad. Summary Judgment is good, and a solid common, but don’t confuse it for unconditional removal. Some good feedback from Drew: my veer into green was a little too prolonged. I could have stuck it out in pure Azorius and probably had a better deck for it.
